Modernization Service

Overview

The Modernization Service helps clients avoid systems obsolescence while taking advantage of the flexibility and ease of maintenance of newer systems. Legacy systems such as COBOL, PL1, RPG and others can be migrated to Java or C# without compromising integrity of the data and the applications' business logic. Migration services are done in collaboration with SRA, Inc.

Due to the high cost of maintaining legacy systems, companies often have to upgrade their systems. Unfortunately, legacy systems do not run on the latest machines and system platforms. As such, there is a need to migrate the legacy systems in order to ensure that important data and business processes remain available in the new system.

SRASEA's Modernization Service makes use of the Venus Migration tool, a proprietary tool, which converts old system codes into newer more popular programming languages. This makes migration work easier for the IT team.

The Venus Migration process can be used to convert whole systems or be used to support part of a software development project.

Legacy migration involves conversion of many of the systems components, such as Operating Systems, Programming Languages, Databases and others. All these have to be considered during the migration process.

The migration process will involve both tool and manual conversion work. An system inventory check will be conducted to identify the effort involved in the whole migration process.

Testing of the migrated system will be conducted after the components have been migrated. This is to ensure that all system components and processes are in working order.

The Venus Migration Tool converts legacy systems into an intermediate language (XML) and then converts to Java, C# or another COBOL system. This makes the conversion tool flexible, allowing for the addition of many convertible legacy systems or for the addition of conversion to other target languages.

With the Venus Migration Tool, the source codes are fed into the tool and are converted automatically into a new target language. Conversion accuracy is up to 90% for PowerBuilder and up to 99% for COBOL. Tool conversion is also faster than manual rewriting.
